Metaphysics 101

It is a branch of philosophical thinking, one that pertains to considering our origins, the nature of reality, and information that goes beyond the natural world. Specifically, it focuses on the quality of being, the nature of time and space, and the many infinite possibilities of what may happen after death. From determinism to cosmology, metaphysics is often associated more with science than esoteric thinking. However, as we grow older in life, metaphysical concepts are definitely considered when thinking about our consciousness, our soul, and our self-image as we go through this journey of life.

On this journey, many of us have read teachings from relationship experts to religious ideologies around the world. Once we began our search however, we quickly realize that knowledge is not ultimately something that can be read in a book, but instead it is something that we acquire through experience. Metaphysics is not an impersonal set of concepts for us to consider. It begins with a deeper examination of ourselves and how we fit into the world now and beyond. In a nutshell, metaphysics begins with an examination of the self.

A journey to wholeness, a healthy self-image, begins by deciding to change. You have to want to understand yourself from an in-depth metaphysical perspective. Meaning, you need to have the mindset that you want to learn how beliefs and thoughts affect both decisions and actions. You began to examine yourself by questioning: who am I? Through reading and practicing meditation, we are more able to understand the process of awakening, and consequently what it means to live a life like a warrior.

This definition of a warrior may be different from one that you personally understand. For the most part, people think of fearless fighters, but there is another type of warrior that I would like to describe. These are warriors of the spirit. Men and women who fight for impeccability with every action and decision they make. The battleground is not out in the open for all to see, because it is within themselves. These warriors fight for freedom and liberation from dependencies, compulsions, attachments and negative emotions. Their disposition and demeanor are of the highest character. These people are souls that know their spiritual center. They realize integrity is all they have.

One of the first major breakthroughs on the warrior’s path comes with the understanding that sin is just a concept like karma is just a concept. Whether or not you believe we are born into sin is a personal opinion; however, sin and karma balance each other nicely. A sin is an offense against God and his commandments, which is subject to judgement in the afterlife. Karma is more about good intentions versus negative intentions. Living a life of selflessness and caring for more than just oneself leads to future happiness, whereas a life of negative actions and selfishness leads to future suffering. Both systems of thought tell us that our intentions and actions are of the upmost importance.

The concept of sin encompasses the idea that our actions, whether good or bad, are judged by God, which by all indications, is merciful, all loving, and understanding. I believe that during this judgement, or life review that takes place immediately following death, the soul reviews its own actions for its last physical incarnation in an effort to learn from its mistakes, while also within the presence of highly evolved beings. In this sense, while in spirit form we play the role of judge and jury while we will see situations that we experienced on earth, but we will experience them through the eyes of those people we affected the most. Thus, until we can process and come to terms with who we really are the higher realms of heaven are not available.

The judgment is not like traditional Western Orthodox theology has constructed him, which is as an overbearing father figure. I believe that God is an indwelling spirit that is always present in each of us as the source of creation. In addition, God is the highest truth of who we are. I am not down grading the importance of Orthodox theology, rather just stating that I do not believe in its version of reality.
By arriving at the above philosophy, we are able to gain enough awareness to start embracing and learning from past experiences. The healing begins once we see obstacles as experiences that we learned from. In this view, we begin healing old wounds and learning to accept ourselves for who we are. In reaching one’s ultimate potential, the first challenge is to face your fears and past traumas, so to fully live in the present moment. In doing so, we need to forgive others and ourselves for the pain and suffering these obstacles have brought about. If we don’t, anger and frustration will eventually tear us down. If we don’t understand what we have experienced, how then can we ever understand and learn from our history.

In short, we learn that the secret of the sages is in their realization that we have a choice to respond to any given situation in life with calmness and clarity, not just anger. Happiness is a choice we make. Consequentially, we may develop faith in the spirit, allowing life to progress more naturally into spiritual direction that participates positively in the scheme of the universe.

Metaphysics is one of the more comprehensive topics that people can discuss, yet this discussion begins from a very simplistic place of origin. It begins with a basic outline for discovering truth by looking inward rather than looking outward. Like all learning, understanding oneself does not come so easily. It takes an unbending intent to achieve a state of mind in which we can acknowledge our emotions and accept them rather than get caught up in them. This requires learning, accepting, and transcending our past limitations, so that we may be present in mind, body and soul when we make decisions. This is the simplicity of metaphysics.
